ATeam United The Klamath Falls Race this year far exceeded last year's, which was very good. Credit goes almost solely to the two key figures Dirk Williams and Bill Cappel who laid out a six mile Cross Country Course which wound though three or four types of terrains- rocky dry desert hill through scrub trees, lowland Pine Forest (see above photo) a field with a jump across the creek! Cool. Cappell laid out Saturday's Post Vintage course, which many were sad was only for that day- a superb winding track which again comprised grass track, cinder road though rustic farm setting, three mud crossings, a dusty off camber section. There were lots of passing spots- and a Vintage support class was run for those who wanted to run both days in Vintage.

Sunday's Vintage Track was absolutely different. Williams ran it out in rough flat alfalfa stubble- a fast downhill and a loooooooong sweeper that just kept going and going and finally came back to the slope of the hill, using an array of tight and long corners. The surface was harrow lines which one was often crossing in a sweeper, so it was both fast and rough. If you like the Farm, Bodnar Ranch is awesome. The whole weekend was paradise in that each track was carefully laid out, and each offered a new experience.

Bodnar Ranch Testimonials

Leaving on Friday afternoon from Salem, we hit a massive thunderstorm at Eugene and some light snow showers over the pass. By the time we got to K-Falls it had cleared up and there was a good sized contingent of riders ready for the weekend. There were snow showers at the track on Friday morning and that night the temp dropped into the teens and had us tent dwellers layering all the clothing we had clothing to keep warm. Not all succeeded. The morning brought clear and sunny skies and soon had the ice melted and the PV and Trials riders warmed up and ready for action. The Trials riders were happy with their challenging sections and the PV riders had a great track to ride with the layout winding in and out of the woods and had a couple of mud holes to bring out some creative lines and quite a few tip overs in the goo. The BBQ was excellent and the corn especially tender and sweet. The night was warmer this time and we looked forward to beating the forecasted rain the next day.

If you thought the Chehalis National was a fast layout this year, this track had unlimited room in the field to run and was WFO most of the way around. Choppy and sweeping, and it worked your legs and arms heavily to stay on the gas. With the free extra classes available to run at this event, I signed up for three and "Iron Man Mark" threw his helmet in for four. The start had a downhill that had you on the gas on for a long way and then kept it on through the fast and very wide left hander. Some small uphills and a few soft spots gave some variety to the riding experience. The Mud Turtles grabbed some of the hardware at the end, especially in the competitive Open Age class with Mark 2nd on his CZ400 and "Junior" sneaking in a 3rd against the much bigger machines.

The rain held off, and only when we left the track at 3:30 did it start up. We later followed Charlie Branstetter and Brett Giboney in the gas sipping S-10 on the highway north of K-Falls in the driving rain. These boys may be good on the track but their navigation skills are a bit shaky as we watched them almost take out 20 orange safety barrels when they made a last second decision to turn left on highway 58. We would of helped them replace the barrels, load the bikes and gear that was thrown from the truck, and pick the brush out of their hair. What are friends for ?

Thanks to Dirk Williams, AHRMA, and all the crew for a great weekend. Four races in September and we can't break the addiction. What will we do ??

After driving about 550 miles, my buddy Randy Webber and I rolled into the Bodnar Ranch, greeted by smiles, gusty wind and occasional rain. We quickly unloaded the bikes and got signed up for the XC race. We drove all that way, we certainly were going to get our monies worth of riding. After the citing lap around a scenic, fun and at times challenging course, I was wet and cold and questioned our sanity. But once the race started, and after we got to ride through a brief snow squall, the sun came out. Steam rose from the ground creating an eerie, magical scene. From then on, there was no more questioning our decision to make the trek to the Bodnar Ranch. The things that stand out for me during the weekend, were many. First off, the hard work, attention to detail, and concern for the riders Dirk Williams and the crew showed, was exceptional. Our hosts the Bodnarıs hospitality and genuine interest in what was taking place was heartening to witness and participate in. Tom Greenıs Sunday morning ³Prayer in the Pits² was gentle reminder of putting things in perspective for me. The California Connection showed up in good numbers, their reputation of fast bikes, trick parts, and pretty girls did not disappoint. I was genuinely impressed with what took place at K-Falls. For all the great battles that took place on the track, there was so many more hand shakes and High Fives at the finish or in the pits. It was a great bridging of two different regions, doing what we love to do. They cheered us on, we cheered them on. Perhaps in the future, we can put out heads together, and come up with ways to bring us even closer. A team race, or sportsmanship award are just a couple ideas for the weekend. The tracks were fun and challenging. On Saturday, the PV races took place and we were greeted with long motos and a couple of tricky mud crossings. I think riding in the great NW paid off dearly in these sections. Randy wowed us all during one of the many great battles that took place, he did a spectacular Flying W through the back mud section to keep the lead and win the race. We had signed up to do the trials on Saturday afternoon, but after 6 long motos, the legs and body told us otherwise, so we opted not to participate. Perhaps next year timing will be a little different to accommodate those wanting to ride all events. My many thanks to Dirk and his crew, Sign-ups and scoring seemed to go on without a hitch and was very efficient.(Especially all the flaggers and starters who so enthusiastically cheered us on all weekend) The Bodnarıs for hosting this event (Oh yes, did I mention the excellent free beer on tap all weekend?) , the caterers for providing a tasty BBQ Saturday night. And everyone who showed up to this event. All in All, it was a very memorable weekend. It is one of the events that makes you want to mark your calendar year after year Scott Johnston 35Y

Back from Bodnar Ranch and time to reflect on the weekend. I would have to say that the whole experience you can get by going to K Falls in late October can not be duplicated any other place, From the start, as you turn up towards the track, there is nothing but good times ahead of you. From paying the gate fees to sign up all you see is smiles, and hear welcome you and  thanks for coming. You can tell by looking at the track and the prep that a whole bunch of time went into this event. As for the track. Absolutely awesome. From the start as you raced towards a 2 story drop off that you could hit WFO into a sweeper that was wide and fast. (I would like to add that I did not see or hear of a first turn pile-up). As you leave the sweeper you go into a series of camber and off camber turns. Then a dog leg to a soft section towards the finish line corner. Then up and into at least one of the longest fun nest sections past the start line that I have ridden on. All this so we can be racers on a Field of Dreams. All day you would see Dirk and his crew doing what needed to be done. Spot watering here or there, replacing ribbon., and always with a smile and time to say thanks for coming, I would like to say, Thanks for doing it Dirk and all your helpers. I had a blast and the track was the best ever. I will be back - Bill McCormick 85r

Bodnar resulted in the best 4 moto day that I've had all season.  Holding the MAG wide open down the big hill and screaming around that monster left-hand sweeper was truly a gas.  Huge thanks to Dirk for an event I'm hoping turns into a true Northwest happening...not to mention, being a local, it's nice to sleep in my own bed at night...much warmer!
