even the Moto Gods could not hold back newcomer David Glassgow who overcame one crazy obstacle after another

You know I came into the pits not really knowing anyone - I meet up with CJ in Woodland two weeks earlier talked to him about my bike and how it wasn't even close to being done, he says borrow someones bike make it to Riverdale!!! I only knew one Vintage racer from buying my parts bike: "Nobby" - and I couldn't see him lending a completely "tricked" out Mugen Cr125 for me to ride ...but I knew my parts were coming in and it would be close to the time of Riverdale... well Thursday night I got home and there was the rings I had to have, I pulled the number plate off of the 94Cr125 and a few other needed hardware to complete the '79 CR250 got it running, ran down the street and got excited about the GP race Saturday! After work Friday was the plan to "get out of dodge"(Sweet Home ,Or) well the mighty Toyota was going to give me fits and the wife was going gang busters getting ready and helping load the P.U. anyways well at 1.am Saturday the P.U. loaded for "Riverdale" and now too beat!!!, we went to bed and gave up on the GP event. took off around noon stop by a few friends to show the bike before the trashing... got into Castle Rock around 5 pm (oh yeah picked up some new boots in Vancouver) so we are in the motel and I'm wearing the new boots to try and get some "break" time in on them ....trying to sleep in a strange town with all my goodies in the back of the truck wasn't easy but was comfortable....6 am got ready seen that it had rained, checked out and headed to Riverdale, we had never been to the track so I really didn't know what to expect other than forecast said possible showers and in the NW that means rain for two weeks so I was happy to see the skies open up to one of those fantastic NW days. It was cool in the morning warm in the afternoon ....My first clue of things might not go as planned started with jetting way too rich after a quick adjustment I'm ready! did the practice had a mean case of "arm pump"and thinking dang why did "I" go for two classes??? I look at the bike and see my trick Air Fox Shox bleeding!!! I thought crap!!! and sat on it, but it really wasn't that bad!!! OK no problem I can make it through the day (he said hopefully) My first moto I didn't get a good start but I'm doing pretty well - I think I'm in 3rd and the leader are right there, during the race my throttle adjustment kept backing out to the point of almost wide open and the white flag I just passed I had to try and keep my brakes on going into the barrel turn came out of the barrel and dumped it picked it up with the clutch pulled in so not to kill it, well the bike is just pinned now I jump on the damn thing like I'm to get through this race like this!!! drop the clutch bike loops out and the rest of the "pack" goes around, during a quick throttle adjustment I noticed my motor lower mount bolt is sticking half way out!!! and the front mount is gone! I fired the crippled bike up and on the way I pick up half of my front mount and one bolt on the way to a finish, the shocks where done - 4 inches of travel? nah bob more like 1inch! I'm in trouble now! well this nice YZ guy says he has some RM shocks that are a little shorter, but if I want to try them I could use them for the day, I'm like right on!!! and my neighbor said He found a guy with some bolts and nuts so half a front mount was going to have to work!!! I tried to make the shock fit but by that time my next moto was coming up so I put the trick blown Air Shox back on I went to gate I had to try and keep my weight forward for most of the race and was doing great! worked up to first place! and then I got a false neutral stomp down nothing stomp stomp off I went to 2nd place not too bad!!! I get back to the pits to discover the fork seals blown I'm about ready to bag it when I'm returning the shocks to the YZ guy I see a few EVO Cr's I go over and see a sight for sore eye's a pair of blown "stock" shocks (but they have springs!) had time to install what I was calling my trick set up one springer one Air Fox Shox wipe the bike off and even watch a little racing....now 2nd moto 1st event was getting a great feel for the bike (imagine that I had shocks now) was good enough for a 3rd place finish... after that race discovered I lost a muffler bolt, I had that bolt!!! got to watch some other riders and give them the full throttle sign, was thinking I could watch my neighbor Ray race his sweet Husky and I did only to realize my next moto was on the line already!!! got up there at the last lap before my moto, was feeling a whole lot more confident now!!! and got the "Hole Shot"!!! with that I just got a little cushion on the pack and rode my lines.. white flag out no real problems? well by the time I got back to Mt. Riverdale the throttle adjustment started to open more and more so I just took it easy for my next few turns and headed to VICTORY!!! Now winning was all I wanted to do (like most of us) but what happened was I meet the greatest group of riders, that would go out of their way to help another rider not just one! almost everyone... I believe my win was me and my team that got the checkered flag !!! this group is my TEAM!!! Dave Glassow #84Cr250 EVO |
