you
know the type of people. They're the ones who would drive all night
on a brain full of caffeine, their hearts bursting with adrenaline,
grinding their teeth through their locked jaws, just to take a shot
at the tightest decreasing radius turn since Ghengis Khan invented
the corkscrew. -Hunter S. Thompson (paraphrased)
Arriving
at twelve-thirty Friday nite, the entire complex looked desolate.
RVs lined the [hard to find at night] driveway, and we parked MUCH
further out in the field than necessary. Saturday morning shed a
lot more light on the situation. Move the rig, set up camp etc.
etcÖÖ.go meet people, (Gary DID get the Maico going) walk
the terrain and such. It is a great feeling to walk the pits and
just talk with people about anything and everything. Truly, that
is what this game is all about. No politics, no tech inspections,
just people having a great time doing what they love to do. Twenty
bucks to bust some nuts on a modern track with a vintage bike for
all day practice? After some reflection (two seconds worth) I paid
up. In spite of the 106 temperature, it was indeed a glorious day.
Open to all off road enthusiasts, the practice was ALL INCLUSIVE
of quads, modern, vintage and evolution machines. I sat in the wings
from time to time and guess what? Lap times did not vary much at
all. I actuallly saw a fellow racer on a CR450F pull off the track
to watch the old bikes shred it up!! BEAUTIFUL!!!
Sunday (Race Day) was cooler. The race action was outstanding, as
were the crew that made it all happen. Won't dwell on details here,
as stories aplenty bless this site. Those who were there get it,
those who werenít will probably just keep promoting lame-duck
events elsewhere. Anytime a little, unsanctioned event in the middle
of nowhere attracts the Pomeroys, Harry Taylor, Buck Murphy, Phil
Larson and a slug of other past national heroes, as well as many
current national competitors, the organisers have done something
right. Everyone had a good time, no one cried foul, no one took
advantage of lax rules. ALL participants worked with the promotion
staff to make sure this was another top-notch northwest event. The
only losers were the ones that didnít show.
Jim, Marvin and CJ (and others) deserve a great deal of thanks for
making this happen.
If you havenít emailed Scott to thank him for use of the
track, please do so. It is getting difficult to find a property
owner willing to dedicate land for our use and face all the litigation
involved ALL ON OUR BEHALF!!
The bar has been raised, and raised very high in the pursuit of
a quality event for vintage racers everywhere!! Rumor has it that
Kelly McKiernan was so impressed with the Hammer & Tongs, he
will be flying up from California to race the VDR Season!!! HOW
COOL! Here is the gauntlet; where will evolution lead us now??
