2008 GOLDENDALE PREVIEW

Hammer & Tongs Five Years In H&T Wire The 5th Hammer & Tongs Season wrapped up at Goldendale halfway through September. This year the series expanded to five races: two at Mabton in Spring, Washougal, Longview and finally Goldendale. The Series has grown over five years from a single race started by frustrated motocrossers to a legitimate presence in the region. H&T has no in-crowd- everyone is welcome, and newcomers are taken into the fold upon arrival. Over the five years H&T has raced at various tracks and each presented challenges and rewards- we encourage criticism in order to make the series better for the riders.

Goldendale H&T Wire Saturday featured Trials and a Gran Prix. The GP track was shortened and rerouted in order that water could be gotten to it. The MX track also was refigured to add a long uphill sweeper before horsepower Hill. This year the wind blew nonstop all weekend and many were seen wearing goggles to keep the grit out of their eyes. Goldendale can be slippery here and there and so the racing surface had both traction and slick places.

The Season ending races held a few surprises for the Championships- In the new Inter-Am Class Tom McAllister overtook Tim Sullivan to take the crown by the slimmest margin of the year- 5 points. Gabe Johnston won his first (and second) moto ever, both in 250 Vintage to take second place for the year. Once again it bears noting that championships are won by DESIRE not speed. Turn up- keep the pressure on, and you more than liely end up on top in your class. Those who skipped the early races lost a critical opportunity to score points.
