Ironman Mark Baer with his tusty CZ Sidepiper

Never follow the leader
by Mark Baer

Goldendale 2007, Moto Two, Second Moto of Inter-Am Intermediates, plus other classes. Going into the second Moto (#67U) Mark Baer was leading (#85R) Bill McCormick in second, and (#86W) Tom McAllister in third.

While Sitting on the start line it was announced that the track crew were going to Disk and Water the track, we waited. Once the track was finally prepped, we once again moved into our starting positions. The gate drops, the #86W bike of Tom McAllister makes it to the corner first, with the #67U bike of Mark Baer, tight on his rear knobby, they turn, and turn, and then begin to slow, they don't hear the roar of anyone behind them, they begin to look backwards, only to see the pack of racers heading the opposite direction. Tom had turned too early and was headed backwards on the track, with Mark following. They both turn around and begin the race to catch up to the pack, finally coming around to the finish line where the race was red flagged to start again.

Start of Second Moto Two, second time.

Lined up and ready to go, the gate drops, the #67U bike of Mark Baer, makes it to the turn first, looking to see where his race buddies Bill and Tom are, satisfied that he is ahead of them, Mark cranks on the throttle and turns, and turns and then has a sinking feeling, "NO ONE is behind him" !, he turned to early, making the same mistake that Tom did. The pack charges on with mark in the rear. Mark finally catches up and passes Tom, he sets his sight on Bill can't make it in time, the Moto ends with the Bill, Mark, and Tom finishing 1,2,3 for the Moto and the overall. Great racing with Tom and Bill, I look forward to many more close ones.
